Candidates were announced for the AALL Executive Board this morning and our very own Karen Selden, Metadata Services Librarian at the Wm. A. Wise Law Library, University of Colorado, is running for a board member position. Look for her on the ballot in the month of October when the voting begins.

Colleague Connection 2017: Complex Challenges/Compelling Solutions
Colleague Connection is an annual continuing education event organized by the Colorado Association of Law Libraries (CoALL), Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL), Rocky Mountain Special Library Association (RMSLA), Colorado Council of Medical Librarians (CCML), and the University of Denver Library and Information Science program. The popular event brings together library students, paraprofessionals, librarians, library administrators, trustees, vendors, and friends of libraries from across the State for an evening of networking, learning, and community.
This year’s event, with featured speaker Deb Zell, is focused on Design Thinking – addressing complex challenges with compelling solutions. This interactive and engaging session will illustrate the methodology of Design Thinking to address actual library challenges/issues/problems submitted by attendees! Design Thinking is used to solve complex issues – like how to make library services more appealing to users, or how to better understand your user’s library experience – by drawing on logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning.
Our speaker began her career in technology a decade ago. After launching a website for Charles Schwab which was a complete failure with users, Deb was puzzled by how she could follow the ‘right’ process (working with extremely smart engineers, talented designers, and lots of data) and fail so miserably. She learned the answer and has spent the last eight years practicing Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design, working with both startups and Fortune 500 companies.
The event will be held at Ruffatto Hall on the University of Denver campus on Thursday, April 27, 2017, 5:00-8:30pm. A networking happy hour from 5:00-6:30pm is followed by dinner and the featured speaker.

CoALL Member Erik Beck Named to the Depository Library Council
Davita Vance-Cooks, Director of the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) appointed Erik Beck, Digital Services Librarian, University of Colorado Law School (and CoALL webmaster) to the Depository Library Council (DLC). DLC members serve three-year terms and advise the Director on policy matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The FDLP “was established by Congress to ensure that the American public has access to its Government information.” As a new member, Erik “will help position the DLC and the FDLP for the GPO’s ongoing mission of Keeping America Informed.”
